This report entitled “A Teaching Report in SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang” is presented to the Faculty of Social, Economics, and Humanities as one of the requirements for the last assignment of teaching practice.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

 

A.  Background of Teaching Practice

Education is an important aspect for everyone. Education can make person’s life better. Education has an important role for improving and building person’s skills and abilities especially student. Education gives many benefits for the students. One of them is students can improve their skills and abilities through teaching learning process. Education not only improves students’ skills and abilities but also gives students knowledge and characters building. Education can be conducted in family, society, or school. School is one of places where students get knowledge, experience, and character building. School cannot conduct education itself, there is a teacher’s role in conducting education at school. Teacher’s role in education is very vital. It is because teacher is a person who manages plans, assesses, observes, and evaluates education at school. Therefore, education cannot run without teacher’s role. Before going to education field, a candidate of teacher especially English teacher must be prepared both in skill or qualification. So that he can be a professional teacher. One of the strategies to facilitate a candidate of English teacher is teaching practice at school.

Teaching practice is a program of university that aims to give students experience in real teaching learning process at school and prepare them before they go to education field such as being a teacher. Teaching practice also aims to improve students’ skill in teaching learning process so they can explain materials very well and prepare them to be a professional teacher. Teaching practice is also as a facility for students to practice theories that they have got during teaching learning process at university especially Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama. Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama has two faculties. They are Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Social, Economics, and Humanities. One of the majors that includes of Faculty of Social, Economics, and Humanities is English Language Teaching Department. English Language Teaching Department is a major that produces many candidates of English teacher. Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto is as a university has an important duty namely creating professional teachers. Therefore, teaching practice can be a facility to achieve the duty.  In Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto, the students of seventh semester must conducted teaching practice at school. School is as place of teaching practice determined by university. The teaching practice is conducted for 2 months from October to December. One of teaching pratice places is SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang. SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang is one of vocational high school in Ajibarang. SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang has six majors namely TKRO, TKJ, TAV, TEI, TSM, and RPL.

 

B.  Objective of Teaching Practice

The teaching practice has some aims namely:

1.      Knowing the real condition of teaching learning process at school.

2.      Improving student’s mental in teaching learning process.

3.      Improving student’s skill in teaching learning process.

4.      Preparing students to be a professional teacher.


 

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

 

A.  Class Observation

The observation focused on the teacher in the teaching and learning process in online class. The class observation had been conducted in one time. Firstly, the teacher greeted students and opened the class through whatsap group by reciting Basmallah together. After that, the teacher asked students to write their name on whatsap group as presence. Then, the teacher told learning objectives and shared material through whatsap group. After that, the teacher asked students to read the material. She also gave students opportunity to ask question if they still faced difficulties or did not understand the material. Students could also seek the material from other sources. After that, the teacher gave students an exercise through whatsap group and asked students to do the exercise individually. Then, the teacher asked students to present the result through whatsap group. Before closing the class, the teacher asked students about difficulties of the lesson and gave feedback for students. The teacher closed the class by reciting Hamdalah together.

 

B.  Teaching Practices

The writer conducted the teaching practice in SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang. The teaching practice was conducted for two months. The writer taught the twelfth grade students of SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang. The schedules of general class were Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. However, the schedule was changed. The schedules of general class would be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The general class was conducted at 08.00-10.00. The numbers of students were 20 students. The supervision class of teaching practice was conducted on Wednesday and Saturday. The first supervision was conducted on Saturday, 7th November 2020. The second supervision was conducted on Saturday, 14th November 2020 and the last supervision was conducted on Wednesday, 25th November 2020. The supervision class was conducted at 08.00-11.00.

In general class, the writer emphasized students’ speaking skill. It was based on the school’s instruction. Therefore, in general class the writer taught the students about material that related to speaking such as greeting, introduction, suggestion, offering help, asking and giving direction, asking and giving direction etc. In general lesson, the writer should not write a lesson plan. Besides that, in supervision class the writer should write a lesson plan. The materials of supervision class were based on the topic that the teacher given for the writer such conversation in supermarket, conversation in tourism and conversation at home. Therefore, the material of first supervision was suggestion. The material of second supervision was asking and giving direction and the last was offering help.

The writer not only taught material for the students but also gave a workshop and English online quiz competition. The workshop was held on Monday, 23rd November 2020. The time or workshop was at 08.00 – 09.30. The title or workshop was miracle parallelogram. The aim of workshop was to improve the students’ vocabulary. The writer saw that there some students that had lacks of vocabulary. Therefore, the writer wanted to solve the problem by conducting a workshop about vocabulary. The students are very interested and they enjoyed the workshop very much. For the English online quiz competition, it was held on Wednesday, 2nd December 2020. The competition was followed by the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth students of SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang that joined to speaking class. There are 35 participants of the competition. The form of quiz was multiple choices. There are 25 questions. Every question had 30 seconds and 1000 points. The writer used kahoot application to hold the English online quiz competition. The three students that got the highest score would get a certificate and interesting gift. It was the result of English online quiz competition below:

   

C.  Strengths and Weaknesses

During the writer conducted the teaching practice in SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang for two months. There are some strengths and weaknesses that the writer got. For the strengths, it can look from the students’ motivation in learning English. After following the teaching practice class, the students’ motivation in learning English improve. Some students think that learning English is easy and fun, they are more motivated to learn English. The students’ speaking skill also improves because in teaching practice class the writer emphasized speaking skill. The students are also more active in teaching pratice class because the writer gave a games in teaching learning process. So that the teaching learning process will be fun and interesting.

For the weaknesses, there some weaknesses that the writer got during teaching practice SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang. First, sometimes there many students are absent because they think teaching practice class is not important. The interaction among teacher and students are less because we must conduct the health protocol such as physical distancing so that the interaction between teacher and student are less. Second, the writer also thinks that online class is not effective from students of vocational high school. It is because just few students that response teacher’s questions in online class. There are some reasons such as most of students are shy or afraid to write English sentences or speak English. Third, the writer should emphasize speaking skill in general class based on the school instruction. Therefore, the writer cannot teach other English skills.

 

D.  Lesson Learned From Teaching Practice

Teaching practice is very important for students as a candidate of teacher especially English teacher. It is because teaching pratice can improve students’ skill in teaching learning process. In Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto, teaching practice is conducted for two months. There are many things that the writer got during teaching practice in SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang as follows:

1.    The writer knows administrations that must be prepared by teacher before conducting teaching learning process such as syllabus, yearly program, semester program, and lesson plan.

2.    The writer knows how to choose an appropriate instructional media for teaching learning process especially for students of vocational high school. Students of vocational will be more motivated and focus in teaching learning process if we use instructional media such as video, music, movie, or games.

3.    The writer knows how to choose an appropriate method in teaching learning process. A method is very important in teaching learning process. Method that we will use must be based on English skills and elements. There are many kinds of method in teaching English such as grammar translation method, audio lingual method, total physical response, discovery learning, etc.

4.    The writer knows how to choose an appropriate ice-breaking in teaching learning process. Ice-breaking is one of important aspect in teaching learning process. It is because ice-breaking can interact students’ motivation in teaching learning process.

5.    The writer knows how to give feedback for students. Sometimes, as a teacher, we should give feedback for the students’ activities. Giving feedback must be considered carefully. It is because giving feedback can affect students’ psychology.

6.    The writer knows the students’ characteristics. Every student has different characteristic especially in teaching learning process.


 

CHAPTER 3

CLOSING

 

A.  Conclusion

Teaching practice is a program of university that aims to give students experience in real teaching learning process at school and prepare them before they go to education field such as being a teacher. Teaching practice also aims to improve students’ skill in teaching learning process so they can explain materials very well and prepare them to be a professional teacher. In Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto, the students of seventh semester must conducted teaching practice at school. School is as place of teaching practice determined by university. The teaching practice is conducted for 2 months from October to December. There are many things that the writer got during teaching practice in SMK Ma’arif NU 1 Ajibarang such as the writer knows administrations that must be prepared by teacher, the writer knows how to choose an appropriate instructional media, the writer knows how to choose an appropriate method, the writer knows how to choose an appropriate ice-breaking, and the writer knows how to give feedback for students.

 

B.  Suggestion

The writer thinks that there are some suggestions for the school. First, speaking skill is an important skill of English but other skills are also important such as reading, listening, and writing. Therefore, in general class the writer wants to teach other skills so not only one skill that is taught but also other skills must also be taught or it is called as integrated teaching. Second, the writer wants to teach real class not only class that is made only to conduct teaching practice. It is because the writer wants to feel the real teaching learning process both online or offline classes.

For the university, the writer thinks that conducting teaching practice for two months is not enough. It is because only one month that is used to conducted teaching practice. In addition, there is a pandemic so some teaching learning process will be online. Therefore, the writer especially student needs more time to add experience and improve skill in teaching learning process through teaching practice.
