This report entitled “A Study Visit to Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto” is presented to English Language Teaching Department of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto as one of the requirements for the last assignment of the college field work program.

The writer would like to express his special gratitude to the advisors, Dinar Faiza, S.S., M.A. who has given valuable advice, suggestion, guidance, comments and support in completing the report of college field work.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

 

A.      Background of College Field Work

Students have a big role in the process of building this nation. Students are as agents of change, students must play a role in making positive changes. The changes can be in the politics, economics, social, education, culture and others based on the nation needs. Therefore, students are expected to have capable abilities, skills, and creativities that can be implemented in the all sectors of life. Students not only get theory at university but also they must implement the theory in the real life. One of programs that can develop students’ experience, abilities, skills, and creativities to enter the working world is college field work program. In college field work program every student is required to analyse the knowledge that has been obtained from college in working world so they can see the implementation the knowledge that they have got during teaching learning process in working world.

College field work is one of programs that conducted by English Language Teaching Department of Universitas Nadhlatul Ulama Purwokerto for the students of seventh semester. The college field work aims to increase students’ knowledge and experience about working world. In college field work program, students are required to visit a place that implement the English knowledge in real life especially working world so that students can see the implementation the English knowledge that they have got during teaching learning process in working world. After conducting the college field work program, students are required to write the report of college field work as the responsibility of this program.

 

 

 

B.       Purpose of College Field Work

The college field work program has some purposes namely:

1.         Giving students experiences and knowledge about implementation of English knowledge in working world.

2.         Preparing students to be professional educator or worker in the future.

3.         Improving the relevant of cooperation among Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto and other institutions.

 

C.      Significance of College Field Work

1.         For the writer

After conducting the college field work, the writer can improve the knowledge, experience, and information about implementation of English knowledge in real life especially working world.

2.         For the institution

The institution can add relation with other institution especially Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Purwokerto so that the institution can be known by many people.

3.         For the reader

The reader can get general information about Hospitality Industry College Puwokerto.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

  

A.      Preparation of College Field Work Visit

The college field work program was conducted in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto (HICP). Hospitality Industry College is one of institutions that prepare people to work in hotel or cruise ship. The writer conducted the college field work on Wednesday, 30 December 2020. The first step, the writer asked permission to conduct the college field work to the director of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto on Sunday, 28 December 2020. After that, the writer conducted interview with the director of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto and conducted observation about facilities of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto on Wednesday, 30 December 2020. The time of conducting the college field work was at 09.00 – 14.00.

 

B.       Profile of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto

Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto was established in by Mr. Septihono, Mr. Pujiono, Mr. Siswanto, and Mr. Sugiarto established in 2005. The reason of establishing Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto was there are some people that graduated from English Language Teaching Department faced difficulty to seek a work. Therefore, Mr. Septihono, Mr. Pujiono, Mr. Siswanto, and Mr. Sugiarto had initiative to establish a Hospitality Industry College. The vision of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto is to prepare students’ mental and character before they go to working world. Therefore, the character building becomes a priority in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto. The location of Industry College is Jl. Ahmad Yani Gg. Utara BP 4 No.53 Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, and Central Java. Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto has had 33 generation. There are a lot of alumni of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto that have worked in hotel or cruise ship.

 

C.      Result of Observation

Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto accepts two generation of one year. The first period is in January and the second period is in July. Every generation has 20 students. The director of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto is Mr. Septihono, staffs 1 is Ms. Arti Kusumah, staff 2 is Mr. Andre, and chef is Ms. Nuni. Facilities of HICP are also complete and satisfied. There is a boarding house so students are from outside of the city can stay in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto. There are also theory and practice rooms. There is a theory room. The theory room is big enough with classical design. There are some practice rooms such as kitchen, mini bar, VIP room, and other. Based on the writer opinion, Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto is different from other hospitality institutions. It is because in HICP, students are prepared to have capable mental and good character before they go to working world. The target of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto is people that have education background namely senior high school and have age under 30 years old.

Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto not only gives students theory but also time to practice the theory that they have got during teaching learning process. In statistic, 30 % is theory and 70 % is practice. Students will get theory in the class for 4 months. After that, they must conduct practice in hotels for 2 months. It aims to prepare students’ mental, abilities, skills, and characters. The English and skills materials that are taught in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto are vocabulary, grammar, conversation, housekeeping, office boy service, food product, bartender, and baker. The schedule of lesson is Monday to Friday. On Monday to Thursday, the time is 07.00 AM – 05.00 PM. On Friday, the time is 07.00 AM – 11.00 AM. The teachers of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto are from LIA course and outside. There are also some requirements to join Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto such as they must have education background namely senior high school, they must have age under 30 years old, they must have ideal posture, and they must have strong willingness.

A lot of alumni of Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto have worked in hotels or cruise ship. Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto conducts memorandum of understanding with some cruise ship companies such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise, P&O Cruises Australia, Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Holland America Line. The position that offered by Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto such as chef, bartender, food and beverage service, and housekeeping. However, before students work in cruise ship, they must conduct apprentice for 6 months in hotels.

 

CHAPTER III

CLOSING

 

A.      Conclusion

After conducting the college field work in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto, the writer gets many precious knowledge and experience. From the college field work program, the writer can know the implementation of English knowledge in real life especially working world. Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto becomes an institution that implements English knowledge in working world. It is because Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto emphasizes English knowledge in teaching learning process. The character building is also important aspect in Hospitality Industry College Purwokerto. HICP always encourages good character both in real life and working world for students. The college field work program aims to improve students’ experience, knowledge, abilities, skills, and creativities before they go to working world. Therefore, the college field work program can be one of facilities for students see the implementation of English knowledge in real life especially working world.

 

B.       Suggestion

The writer thinks that there are some suggestions about the implementation of college field work program. First, the university must add references of the places so the students can choose the places based on the university recommendation. Second, the time of implementing the college field work is not effective because there are some students that still do the teaching practice report. Third, conducting the college field work in the institution is still less to add experience for the students. Therefore, the writer hopes in other time, the college field work can be conducted in other places such as Yogyakarta or Bali.
